Dupree Dog Days Brings in Predators while handing out over $8000 in cash and prizes
31 Coyotes, 1 Fox and 3 Bobcats were harvested.
Less than perfect
weather caused 4 teams to turn around and go home before check in on Friday
Night, but it
didn’t stop Dupree Dog Days from being a success. 46 teams
graced Pioneer Hall on Friday Night to put their names in the 2nd
Annual Dupree Dog Days, Predator Calling Contest. The Chili Feed and
Calcutta raised over $1,600 for the Dupree Daycare and over $8,000 was
handed out in Cash and Prizes. Conflicting reports from hunters made it
known that predator calling is never an exact science. 28 teams of hunters
got blanked while 18 teams brought in at least 1 animal. Many teams
reported seeing few if any coyotes while other teams saw well into the
double digits. Bobcats were the story of the night as 3 teams brought in
cats and one team brought in a fox, however the Grand Slam Bounty was not
paid by 1st Financial Bank USA because no team brought in the
Grand Slam of 1 Coyote, 1 Fox and 1 Bobcat. 31 Coyotes were killed with
only 11 mangy coyotes being inspected (much better than 2005).
1st Place went to the team of Rocky Longbrake and Terry Russell, they harvested 6 Coyotes total and on their 3:00 stand they called in 6 total, but only 3 got close enough to shoot according to Russell. For their efforts they received 2 Checks, the 1st Place check of $828 and they also bought themselves in the Calcutta and received a $2,284 check for that investment making their contest take over $3000. Not a bad deal for doing something you love.
2nd Place went to Randy Roede and Brent VanDerLay, they brought in 5 Coyotes and also had the Big Dog at 34.5LBS. The total for 2nd Place $496.80, the Big Dog prize was $460. This team also bought themselves in the Calcutta and that paid them $1,370.40. This team’s total purse was over $2300.
3rd Place was the team of Jim Selby and Don Moeltr, they had 4 Coyotes and took a check home for $331.20. The Buyer of this team was Dupree Local Dave Schuhhardt, he was also a hunter in this contest who got blanked, so the Calcutta check for $913.60 helped him lick his wounds.
Little Dog
was won by 12 year old Chantry Norman who teamed up with long time coyote
hunter Mike
Norman, their dog was 15.7LBS this paid $460. We understand
that Chantry had to do the shooting because Mike was having trouble hitting
the sweet spot. A young man got an experience he will never forget and that
should help promote the sport of hunting to another generation.
We gave out to many door prizes to mention, Jerry Hunsley from Wiley One Predator Calls had some bad luck hunting but gave a great demonstration on howling and calling while promoting his product we thank Jerry for coming and for donating many calls to the contest.
The Big Door prizes
were given away last and everyone got a shot at winning one.
A full suit of Camo was left over from last year’s contest, donated by Desert Shadow Camo, it was won by Cole Herrin.
A 3-9X42 Scope was donated by Sightron, the winner of this was Daryl Ferguson who puts on the Meadow contest
The Grand Door Prize was a fully loaded digital Game call from Minaska Outdoors, this call is customizable and sells for $469.95, the winner was Sage Till, another young hunter and a student at Dupree High School, he is a wrestler and was extremely grateful that there was not a wrestling tourney this weekend.
There were more sponsors than this but we have to keep this short, some of the main ones were Hunter Speacialty Products, Dakota Yote Varmint Calls, Decoy Heart and Ash Creek Taxidermy.
Next Year’s event is currently scheduled for the 2nd weekend in February of 2007 location to be announced at a later date.
Thanks to everyone who donated and attended this event, we hope to see you all next year, and remember we are all sportsmen so Hunt Fair, Hunt Ethically and Hunt Often.
