Hay Field Coyote
photo

Missed a Coyote! That's when you can tell it's early in the season, missed one at 225yds. I was driving by the hay field pictured above and saw some fresh sign. Thinking that there are plenty of good hiding spots I parked the Hemi and walked in. After calling my typical 20 minutes I was pretty sure nothing would show, but as I scanned the horizon with my new Nikon ActionEX binos I saw an older dog circling around to my location. He finally got close enough to see with the naked eye, (about 500yds) and I put my gun into position. The Dog layed down right there, and didn't move. I changed from Lil' Jack on my FX3, to pup distress this got the coyote to stand again. He saw Gus (my dog) and was a little shy about coming in, then my dog took off after a bird and the coyote saw his chance, he trotted in another 100yds then sat down again. He kept looking over to a draw that was to my right, somewhat of a blindspot. I was thinking perhaps another coyote was coming in but I couldn't see anything. I changed sounds again to a screamer, this got him coming, he came at a trot and stopped right in front of the 2nd row of haybales in the picture. I had ranged these bales before I started calling and I was sure they were just over 200yds. This stand had already lasted 40min. and he didn't look like he was coming in. I centered the BSA Mil Dot Scope just above his chest and squeezed the trigger. The coyote slipped around those bales and the last thing I saw was his tail going over the far hill.

Oh well it was fun! If you see a hayfield where the hay hasn't been moved yet, you might want to try it, these bunches of bales hold rabbits and mice and there are plenty of coyotes checking them out on their daily rounds.

I plan on Antelope Hunting this weekend so check back for more stories from SoDak!
