Last January I was loaned a Fox Pro FX3, nothing against the company but I would set it out in front of me 20 or 30 yards and play it. Sometimes I couldn't get the remote figured out, sometimes it would work great but nothing would come. I was getting frustrated, because I have seen people use these with great success, but I hadn't seen it. This Fall when the pups are out I decided to perfect my Fox Pro calling. I've been out 5 or 6 times in the last 30 days and nothing. Then I was messing around online and found Les Johnson on PredatorQuest.com and saw some episodes of his television series. He holds the Fox Pro in his hand and uses short bursts of 15 to 30 seconds then waits. Others I have talked to say to just turn it on and wait, the noise never stops. This hasn't worked for me.
This morning was perfect I went outside about 6:15am and there was frost everywhere, the first real frost of the year. I have to help my wife with the kids in the morning since she is 6 weeks from exploding so I was rushing through my duties with one thing on my mind, calling a coyote. I finally got out of the house about 7:00 and went to do one stand before morning chores. It was perfect the sun was to my back, no wind and Gus was in the mood to hunt. I set up and used the tactic I learned watching Les, mimiced him to perfection. Shut off the machine and sat back waiting for action. There he was a nice grey dog coming directly in front of me, he came straight at me until he hit the 400 yard mark and then turned. I had a ridge about 300 yards to my left and with the slightest of a breeze hitting me in my right shoulder I knew he would head for the ridge. Sure enough with no caller going and Gus playing just below me, the Coyote circled left and dissapeared. I hit the Jackrabbit Distress for just a couple of seconds and my prey reappeared right on top of the ridge. He caught sight of my dog and stopped to observe. Old Gus never saw him, he was preoccupied with a hole in the ground. The Coyote however saw Gus and didn't know if he sould come closer or not. I guessed he was at 300 yards, I put out a couple of barks to see if I could get him into a fighting mood, but he sat down. I decided to make a move, sure he was still watching Gus I slowly moved the CZ .223 over to my left, put the crosshair right on his ear and squeezed the trigger. WAM!!!! Just like on TV the dog stiffened up and fell in his tracks. What a morning, I love frosty mornings in October, they really get me excited to hunt. This wasn't the first coyote I ever called in and I hope he's not my last but trying a new trick and having it work is exciting. I haven't given up on the Fox Pro yet, I just need to make it work better for me.
I hope you all have the strength to take time off and enjoy life.
Happy Hunting!
