Boy I had a great/terrible morning yesterday. Walked out on my deck and the weather was perfect 18 degrees, very slight breeze out of the North. I thought to myself, the Cows can wait a little bit, I'm going to call in a coyote. I cammoed up, got in my pickup and felt Guilty about the cows. I then backed into the shop and loaded their feed. I figured that way I could feed them as soon as I was done instead of having to come back to the house. I set up in a stand that works for me about once a year, the sky was clear and the soud was carrying so I thought this would be my time. I called for about 10 minutes and low and behold coming up the fence-line right in front of me was a large mature coyote. He crossed the ditch ahead, I had the ditch figured at 450yds, so I needed him to come closer. In my excitement I must have tipped him off, I'm not sure how, he was up wind, I barely moved, but he stopped hard. He stood there for what seemed like a coon's age, then slowly headed back the way he came. Knowing that my attempt was futile, I took a long range shot and of course I missed. He dissappeared into Rudy Creek, as I start to get up discussed with myself I see another young coyote about 300yds North of the first coyote's position. He was waiting for the big boy to leave before he tried his luck, but the shots must have stopped him, if I would have let the big guy go without trying and impossible shot he probably would have came in. I tried to call him back but he just stood there at about 600yds looking stupid, and finally wandering off back to Rudy Creek.
I decided it wasn't my day and went to feed cows. I found 2 other coyotes out just roaming around. With a pickup full of feed I didn't dare try to run them down, I did however just miss one as he was crossing the creek in front of me.
So for the day it was Coyotes 4 - Hunter 0
