Dead Cow!
Had a cow die the other day, moved her to a spot where I could sneak up on her good. I left her alone for a couple of days, but last night I went and inspected her, sure enought the coyotes were just getting started on her. I've always said the best coyote hunters are poor ranchers. I'm trying to prove that theory. This morning at first light I hiked over the hill to get in range. I have my CZ .223 sighted in good with a mil dot scope. I'm pretty accurate up to 400yds. I picked a spot 300 yards, far enough as not to disturb something eating, but close enough to get a sure shot. Problem, NO COYOTES. Now I have seen coyotes devour a cow in 3 days, that is why I was going today, I knew she wouldn't last long once they found her, but NOTHING. Hard to figure, I had the wind, I walked in from far enough as they couldn't hear my pickup. I have no real explination, I waited for about an hour for activity, put out a howl and listened for a response, still nothing. After losing patients I went and inspected the carcass and it looks as if last night was their night off. I cannot explain it, but it's my luck. A perfect morning with no wind and NO Dogs. Oh well it was sure a pretty morning. I made my chore circle checking water tanks and drove up on a coyote. He got a pretty good jump on me but I shot at him anyway. At least I fired my gun.
